One of the drawbacks of Qi chargers was the need to find the “sweet spot.” As mentioned previously, a big benefit of Qi2 is the magnetic alignment. Not only does this reduce the likelihood of bad alignment, it also means you’ll never go to grab your freshly charged phone only to realize it’s not—because your device somehow became misaligned, and the charging was interrupted. Phones are also secure while being charged, which means you can simply rely on the magnets to keep your device in place. This is particularly useful in cars, as your phone won’t require a bulky holder—the magnets are enough to keep it in place.

Improved Compatibility

Qi2 offers a unified charging standard for both Android and iOS devices. While Samsung has yet to announce a Qi2 phone, makers like HMD are launching Qi2 compatible devices. The other advantage hidden in the new wireless technology is that all Qi2 devices are backwards compatible with Qi chargers and devices (albeit, at lower power levels). So, the future looks bright, one where an Android user could borrow a charger from an iPhone owner.

The main safety benefit of the Qi2 charging standard is improved FOD (Foreign Object Detection). This ensures only compatible devices will be charged because Qi2 wireless chargers employ sophisticated algorithms to minimize the chance of damage due to charging non-compliant items. This peace of mind combined with better temperature management and automatic power adjustment while charging means Qi2 technology is leaps and bounds better than its predecessor.
